This clip, in English, is a rendering of a conference paper. It summarizes the Allama’s reformist ideas and modernism that manifest themselves in his travelogue, “Safarnamah-i-Roum wa Misr wa Sham“. Many interesting statements that Shibli made following his observations during his journey (translated into English) are reproduced in this clip. Shibli’s emphasis on the need for modern education, while holding on to whatever is good in classical education, is unique for his times which witnessed either extreme Westernization or rigid orthodoxy.
